Offline-Capable Filipino Sign Language: vlog Student Develops Offline AI-Powered Filipino Sign Language Translator

vlog’s College of Information Technology and Engineering conducted their 2026 Capstone Exhibit for BSIT (Bachelor of Science in Information Technology) and BSCPE (Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering) graduating students. They presented their innovative capstone projects featuring sustainable engineering and game-changing software which were designed to address community challenges, improve lives, and drive sustainability.

Christian Dhinesh Jost, a 4th-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology with a specialization in Artificial Intelligence, the project introduces an offline-capable Filipino Sign Language (FSL) detection system designed to promote inclusive education.

Bridging the Gap

In an era where technology constantly reshapes human interaction, inclusivity remains a critical benchmark for meaningful innovation. The project is entitled, “Offline-Capable Filipino Sign Language Application: Bridging Communication Gaps for Inclusive Education,” a system that leverages AI-powered gesture recognition to translate FSL signs in real-time. During his live demonstration, Jost demonstrated the system’s ability to track hand movements and accurately translate gestures—such as showing the sign for “THANK YOU” (SALAMAT) with 100% confidence—directly on-screen without requiring an active internet connection.

The primary motivation behind this innovation stems from a pressing real-world issue: the accessibility gap in specialized education and daily communication. Addressing his research findings, Jost emphasized that there is a noticeable shortage of trained, professional FSL personnel across academic institutions and public services.

“This system’s not to primarily take their place, but act as a supplement to be there when they’re not available,” Jost explained. 

By running locally on user devices without reliance on high-speed internet connectivity, the application ensures continuous accessibility even in resource-constrained environments or remote educational settings where internet access may be unreliable.

Jost’s capstone project represents a crucial step forward in applying computer vision and machine learning toward community-centric solutions. By harnessing AI to assist individuals who rely on sign language, the initiative highlights how modern technology can serve as a supportive tool for accessibility, breaking down societal communication barriers and fostering a more connected, inclusive environment for all.
